How It Works

Based on a simple task or score, that is introduced and shared at the beginning of each lab, the participants are invited to conceive individual film-choreographic miniatures within a 1½-hour timeframe.
At the end of each session, the filmic drafts that have taken shape will be shared and discussed in small groups, emphasizing the process rather than the result. The feedback rounds provide space for reflection on each one’s own work, enriched by the perspectives and ideas of other artists from the field.

What We Practice

The aim is to practice and enhance skills at the intersection of dance and film, focusing on aspects like the relationship between the camera and physical movement, and the use of editing to choreograph movement in film. The lab’s idea is to strengthen existing artistic approaches while exploring and incorporating novel strategies and methods, drawing inspiration and feedback from fellow participants.

Led By

The lab is collectively facilitated by Anna Athanasiou, Silja Tuovinen, and Sarah Möller, who conceived the format.

Who Can Join

It is open to artists working in dance and/or film who are interested in exploring movement beyond disciplinary boundaries. All levels are welcome.

What You’ll Need

The lab takes place online via Zoom in English. You will need a camera – your phone works just fine – and optionally some editing software.

    YOUR HOSTS

    Silja Tuovinen

Silja Tuovinen is a Finnish choreographer with an artistic practice focusing on cinematic expression and choreographic film. She specialises in consecutive one-take films with long choreographies for both people and the camera. Her patiently crafted film works have been shown in international film festivals, galleries, and site specifically.

Silja’s artistic work is particularly focused on “eternal subjects” such as loss, finitude and death, as well as planetary and cosmic phenomena of massive scale such as running of time and weather conditions. Silja creates her artworks using what she calls „reduced technologies and methods“, giving focus to elemental, low-tech, vulnerable and intimate approaches to filmmaking.

Silja holds an MFA in Choreography from Stockholm University of the Arts (2022) and a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from Malmö University (2018). Next to her own artistic works Silja also works as a curator, facilitator, dramaturg, writer, dancer, producer and performance-maker.

    Anna Athanasiou

Anna Athanasiou is a dancer, choreographer, and video dance artist, whose creative work connects performance, film, and interdisciplinary practices, with over a decade of experience collaborating with theatres such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Greek National Opera, DNT Weimar, and Semperoper Dresden.

Alongside her performance career, she develops choreographic and video dance projects that expand on professional dance education, and has held leading roles as movement director and dance captain; she is also a certified Pilates instructor. She is a recipient of the TANZPRAXIS Scholarship
(Berlin, 2022), awarded for her research in making video dance films.

    Sarah Möller

Sarah Möller is a dramaturge and curator based in Berlin. Her work explores the intersection of film, performance, and architecture, engaging with notions of entanglement, spectrality, and ambiguity.

From 2012 to 2025, she worked for the international film festival POOL – MOVEMENT ART FILM Festival Berlin, serving as artistic co-director for many years.
She represents the films of New York-based choreographer Yoshiko Chuma and is closely connected with her company, The School of Hard Knocks.

Sarah has curated film programms in cooperation with teatro san materno, Ascona (CH); La MaMa Moves!, New York (US), National Center for Contemporary Arts, Ekaterinburg (RU); Jumping Frames, Hong Kong (HK), Romanian Architecture Annual, Bucharest (RO), and others.

She studied Media Culture at the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Université Lumière Lyon II, and the University of Potsdam (MA). She has also held teaching assignments at the Free University of Berlin and the Inter-University Center for Dance (HZT), Berlin.
